Pallarenda Dog Beach

Pallarenda Dog Beach sits on Cape Pallarenda Road at Town Common, about 10 to 15 minutes north of the Townsville CBD and looking straight across to Magnetic Island. The draw is a dedicated 570 metre off-leash stretch of wide, open sand where dogs can run, swim and burn off energy with plenty of room to spread out.

Leash status

Off-leash access applies on the sand from Beach Access Ramp 17 north to the Cape Pallarenda National Park boundary, an unfenced free-run zone under Townsville City Council rules. Dogs must be on leash in the main parking area, on all paths and ramps and near the playground, so keep the lead clipped in until you are on the sand. Effective voice control is required the whole time, and any dog that becomes aggressive or a nuisance has to be removed immediately. Bag dispensers and bins are provided at the entrance.

Water and terrain

The beach is wide and sandy with shallow water that suits swimmers and paddlers alike. Visit at lower to mid tide for the maximum exposed sand; high tide narrows the run considerably. This is a tropical coast, so marine stingers are a possibility and crocodile sightings do occur on this stretch. If either hazard is flagged, keep your dog out of the water. In warm weather the sand can push 50 degrees by mid-morning, so test it with the back of your hand before letting your dog tear off.

Max: check the sand with the back of your hand before you unclip. At Pallarenda the surface heats up fast and your dog will not stop to tell you.

Getting there and parking

Follow Cape Pallarenda Road north from the city towards the Town Common. Off-street parking is ample, with the main access for the off-leash area near the parking between gates 9 and 10. The beach sits next to a horse exercise area and links into the coastal walking paths, so expect other users and keep control where the tracks converge.

Worth knowing

Natural shade along the dunes is limited, so bring your own shelter and water for anything longer than a quick splash. Cane toads can be active near the vegetation line at dusk, keep your dog close as the light fades and do not let it snuffle around the dune edge.

When to go

Early morning is the sweet spot: cooler sand, lower tide windows and the sunrise over Magnetic Island that locals turn up for. Mid-morning to mid-afternoon in the build-up and summer months is best avoided for heat, and always check tide times before you set out.

While you're out there

The Tobruk Kiosk back towards the Strand is a solid coffee stop on the way home, and Juliette's on the North Ward foreshore does a good breakfast with dogs welcome outside. If you would rather stretch legs than swim, the Goat Track gives you a proper climb over Castle Hill.
