Goat Track

The Goat Track is the short, sharp and direct foot route up Castle Hill, Townsville's landmark granite monolith, climbing roughly 540 metres one way over rocky ground and formed stairs to a summit with 360-degree views across the city, Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island. It is dog-friendly, but it is a genuine climb and the tropical heat is the real hazard, so this is a dawn or dusk walk rather than a mid-morning stroll.

The walk

About 540 metres each way, rated moderate to steep, on uneven rocky single track with plenty of natural and formed stairs and roughly 140 to 150 metres of elevation gain. Reckon on 30 to 45 minutes up depending on fitness and how many photo stops the dog causes. The reward at the top is an open, unbroken view that few city walks anywhere can match, and the descent is quick if hard on the knees.

Leash status

Dogs are welcome but must be kept on lead at all times. Pick up after your dog and use the bins at the base or carry it out. The track is narrow and busy, with the hill drawing a steady stream of runners and walkers, so keep your dog under close control and yield to faster traffic on the stairsteps.

Water and hazards

There are no reliable water points along the track itself and the route is largely exposed, with only patchy shade, so carry ample water for both of you. The rock holds the heat and there is almost no cover: climb at first light, turn back if your dog is panting hard, and skip it entirely in the middle of a hot day because the stairs and bare rock are no place for paws at midday. After rain, the rocky sections can be slippery underfoot.

Getting there and parking

The trailhead is off Gardiner Street in North Ward, a short walk from the North Ward cafe strip and about 15 minutes on foot from the city centre. There is a small parking area at the base. Direct bus access to the trailhead is limited, so most people walk in or drive.

When to go

Very early morning or near sunset, well clear of the midday heat. The hill draws heavy use every day, so weekends and the cooler dry season months are busy and the narrow track gets congested; an early start buys cooler rock and a clearer path.

While you're out there

North Ward and The Strand cafes with outdoor seating are an easy walk for a post-climb coffee, with Juliette's and Chubby Magpie Coffee Roasters both welcoming dogs at the outdoor tables, and Odyssey on the Strand right on the foreshore. The Strand foreshore walkway is close by for a flatter cool-down leg.
