Bam Cafe & Bakery

Bam Cafe & Bakery runs along New Town Road, about ten minutes' drive from central Hobart, and it has been built by hand: veteran baker Jamie turns out the pies, rolls and sweets from scratch, and the curried scallop pie has become the thing people cross town for. Footpath tables sit out the front and dogs are welcome at them.

The dog setup

Outdoor seating only, on the footpath along New Town Road, and indoors is reserved for service animals. Staff are friendly with dogs but there is no confirmed water bowl, so bring your own. The tables sit right on the main road, so pick the spot furthest from the kerb if your dog is unsure about buses and delivery vans.

Worth knowing

Beyond the scallop pies, the cabinets carry hearty meat pies, egg and bacon rolls, the Bam's Big Brekkie, salad rolls and homemade apple cakes and cinnamon rolls. Hours are 6:30am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, to 7:30pm Friday, 7am to 5pm Saturday and 7am to 3pm Sunday. Street parking out front is limited; try the side streets such as Cross Street, and several bus routes run along New Town Road if you are walking in from Hobart.

Cornelian Bay is close by, and under City of Hobart rules dogs may go off lead along the foreshore from the car park area to Cornelian Bay Point, with on-lead rules elsewhere. New Town Bay Reserve is on-lead, and along the New Town Creek tracks dogs must stay leashed and out of the water's edge by ten metres to protect the rivulet habitat.

For a proper run, John Turnbull Park Fenced Dog Park at Lenah Valley is a short drive away, and the New Town Falls Track suits a leashed bushwalk. Close by on the bay, The Cornelian Bay Boathouse anchors the waterfront end of the suburb.
