RockSea House

RockSea House brings Nepalese and Himalayan cooking to 59 Main Road in Moonah, and it has quickly become one of Hobart's northern suburbs' most talked-about kitchens. Hours split two ways: 3:30pm to late Monday to Friday for dinner, and 9am to 2pm on weekends for a breakfast and brunch service that draws a crowd of its own.

Bringing your dog

There is no dedicated courtyard, so the footpath tables out front are the practical option with a dog, and it is worth phoning ahead on (03) 6228 9426 to confirm a footpath table is set up on the day you visit, since street-front seating changes with Hobart weather. Main Road carries steady traffic and foot traffic right past the tables, so keep the lead short and settle your dog on the inside of the table. Bring your own water bowl to be safe.

The kitchen

The menu is proper Himalayan comfort food: handmade momos including chicken and buff, momo platters for sharing, Thakali thali and khaja sets, sizzling sekuwa off the grill, plus laphing and chowmein for street-style snacks. There is a substantial vegetarian and vegan selection, and a live-music program shows up on the venue's socials.

Getting there and a walk after

Free street parking runs along Main Road and the side streets, though it tightens during the weekend brunch rush. For a pre- or post-meal walk, Jim Bacon Memorial Reserve in West Moonah loops through black gum bushland and open grass, with signage marking the leash rules.
