Chanoyu Cafe

CHANOYU is a Japanese-inspired cafe on Nerang Street in the middle of Nerang, built around matcha and hand-made desserts, with an outdoor terrace set aside for pets and their owners. If you want a good iced matcha latte with the dog at your feet, this is one of the few dedicated Japanese cafes on the Gold Coast that actively makes room for them.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on the outdoor terrace, which is generally shady and comfortable through the day. Staff are friendly and have been known to hand out a dog biscuit, though it is worth bringing your own water bowl to be sure. The terrace is compact, so it suits a settled dog rather than an energetic one.

The vibe

The kitchen leans hard into matcha and hojicha: tarts, cream puffs and yuzu cheesecake lead the cabinet, with matcha lattes the signature order. The savoury side runs to katsu sando in pork or chicken, omurice and curry rice. Hours are 7am to 2pm Monday to Saturday with the kitchen winding down around 1:30pm, and it closes Sundays, so confirm before a long drive.

Getting there and parking

You will find it at 6A/54-58 Nerang Street, just off the main roads through town, with free on-site parking. The Nerang station and the M1 interchange are both close, which makes it a handy stop for anyone crossing the hinterland side of the city.

When to go

Weekday mornings are the calmest window before the local breakfast crowd builds. It is good for a relaxed sit rather than a big off-leash energy burn, so give the dog a run first and let the terrace do its thing after.
