Heirloom Specialty Coffee

Heirloom Specialty Coffee is a cosy local cafe at 81 Avenue Road, Mosman, just off Military Road in the back streets, and it is one of the more genuinely dog-oriented cafes on the lower north shore. The coffee is the headline, but the welcome that local dogs get is a real point of difference rather than an afterthought.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating, and the cafe leans into it: dog treats including house pupcakes made with banana, carrot, yoghurt and peanut butter, plus a dedicated dog wall where regulars post photos of their dogs. Staff are well practised with canine customers. Carry a water bowl as backup and keep the lead short on the Avenue Road footpath, which carries school and commuter traffic in the mornings.

The menu

Specialty coffee leads, with house blends and rotating single origins across espresso and filter, plus matcha. The food list covers a signature brekky burrito, bacon and egg rolls, a sausage and egg muffin, toasties and the schnitty sanga, with muffins, croissants and banana bread on the counter. It opens at 6am daily (7am Sundays) and winds up early afternoon, so it fits an early walk rather than a late lunch.

Getting there and parking

Free street parking runs along Avenue Road and the surrounding residential streets, busiest on weekend mornings. Mosman Bay and its wharf are a short walk down the hill, which sets up a good harbour-side circuit.

Close by with the dogs

Mosman Council is strict: dogs are prohibited on Balmoral Beach and its foreshore. The legal off-lead options nearby are Mosman Off Leash Dog Area, Sirius Cove Reserve, which is off-lead all day on weekdays and before 9am and after 4pm on weekends, and Reid Park near Mosman Bay. Cafe Monstera at the Mosman Bay wharf is another dog-friendly stop, and the Balmoral Beach to The Spit walk covers the foreshore on a lead.
