Darling Street Espresso

Darling Street Espresso occupies a renovated corner building at 146 Athol Street, a short walk from Moonee Ponds Junction, and it makes room for dogs exactly where it matters: the large shaded rear courtyard and the side passage seating. With more than 700 reviews behind it, the cafe is one of the busiest in the suburb, and the outdoor areas are the reason to bring the dog rather than settling for the Art Deco dining room inside.

Dogs are welcome in the side passage and the rear courtyard, both outdoors; the indoor dining area stays people-only. The courtyard is shaded and set back from the street, and staff are clearly used to canine guests, with water bowls usually appearing without a request. It works best for a dog that will settle under a table while you eat, since the space is shared with other diners rather than fenced off.

Worth knowing

The kitchen runs all-day breakfast and lunch on Industry Beans coffee, and the chilli scramble has become the signature dish, with fritters, burgers and the cinnamon scroll also drawing regular praise. Weekends are busy enough that booking ahead is worthwhile if you want a courtyard table. Hours run 7:30am to 3pm weekdays and 8am to 3pm weekends. Street parking in the surrounding blocks is hit and miss on weekend mornings, so the tram and bus interchange at Moonee Ponds Junction is the easier arrival.

Queens Park, with its lake and Edwardian plantings, is on leash only throughout Moonee Valley, and the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail also requires a lead to protect the waterbirds along it. For an off leash run before brunch, Bent Street fenced dog park and Aberfeldie Park are the closest designated areas, both a short drive from the cafe. If you are making a morning of the strip, Middle Child in Ascot Vale is another dog-friendly table up the road.
