Café De Vili's

Cafe De Vili's on Manchester Street in Mile End South is the 24/7 home of a South Australian institution. The Vili's bakery name is stitched into the state's food identity, and this cafe-diner serves the full range around the clock: meat pies, pasties, sausage rolls, schnitzels, chips and gravy and the legendary pie floater. For dog owners the appeal is different again: dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating at any hour, which makes it the rare post-late-walk or pre-dawn-trip feed where the dog does not have to wait in the car.

The dog setup

Dogs stay on leash at the outdoor tables, with inside access reserved for service animals. Staff are generally easygoing with dogs and may bring water out, but carry your own to be safe, particularly in the odd hours when the room runs on skeleton crew. The forecourt-style seating is straightforward: park the dog beside the chair, order at the counter, and settle in.

The vibe

Do not come expecting brunch aesthetics; this is a pie institution. The cabinet covers the classics, the kitchen does schnitzels and a goulash pie, and the pie floater, that Adelaide specialty of a meat pie drowned in pea soup, remains the bucket-list order. Vanilla slices and cakes cover dessert. It runs to a broad crowd around the clock, from tradies at dawn to night-shift workers at 2am, and weekday mornings and mid-afternoons are the quieter windows for a table with a dog.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits just off South Road with free on-site parking out front and street parking on Manchester Street, and the car park turns over steadily even at peak. It is a short drive from the city, with the Adelaide Park Lands and the Torrensville Dog Park close enough to build into a walk-and-pie loop.
