Hector’s Corner

Hector's Corner is a small neighbourhood cafe at 23 Armstrong Street in the Middle Park shopping village, and it carries a local reputation as one of the more dog-welcoming stops on the strip. Patrons regularly single out the team's attitude to visiting dogs, which is the main reason it earns a stop mid-walk rather than just a takeaway coffee.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor footpath tables on Armstrong Street, not inside, which is the standard arrangement under Victorian food rules for a counter-service cafe this size. Staff take orders out to you at the table and are noticeably accommodating with dogs, including a pat and a bit of attention. Water is generally provided for visiting dogs; confirm on the day. Keep your dog close on lead: the footpath seating sits on a busy village strip with steady pedestrian traffic past the tables.

The food

The draw is coffee plus a rotating run of large, made-to-order sandwiches, with the schnitzel sandwich and toasties earning repeated mentions, alongside bacon and egg hash brown breakfast burgers and a cabinet of cakes and baked goods. It is quick, unpretentious food suited to a stop on a dog walk rather than a long brunch. Hours run 6am to 3pm daily, with occasional public-holiday variations.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits in the Middle Park village a short walk from the Route 96 tram on Canterbury Road, which makes it an easy public-transport stop. Free street parking is available along Armstrong Street and the surrounding residential streets.

While you are out there

Middle Park Beach is about 600 metres west, and the Albert Park Dog Off Leash Area gives your dog a proper run a few minutes away. For a longer on-lead loop, the Albert Park Lake circuit is close, and Jack the Geezer around the corner is another dog-friendly coffee option in the village.
