The Roast Office Cafe

The Roast Office occupies the old post office building at 37 Darley Road, Manly, one block back from the beachfront. It runs 7am to 1pm every day, which puts it squarely in morning-walk territory, and the former-post-office room with its funky, reclaimed-timber fitout makes it a more interesting sit than the strip two streets over.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the footpath tables out front, and four-legged regulars are part of the furniture here. Water bowls are typically available, though no printed dog menu exists, so bring your own treats if the croissant crumbs are not enough. The snug indoor room is people only, so head straight for the outdoor tables with your dog.

Worth knowing

The coffee is locally roasted and consistently well rated, and the pastry case does the rest: plain and Nutella croissants, banana bread and a small breakfast menu that covers French toast, hash browns and sandwiches. A communal table runs through the middle of the room, so solo walkers fit in easily. The off-strip position keeps it noticeably calmer than the beachfront cafes in peak season.

Getting there and parking

Darley Road is a 5 to 10 minute walk from Manly Wharf, so arriving on foot or by ferry is the easy option. Street parking on Darley Road and the surrounding streets gets busy on weekends, with the Wilson Parking station on Whistler Street a short walk away as backup.

Close by with the dogs

The beachfront promenade suits a post-coffee walk on the lead, since the main surf beach is off limits to dogs. For a longer outing, the Manly to Spit Bridge Coastal Walk starts near the harbour side. LM Graham Reserve in Fairlight offers a fenced dog area, and Ripples Little Manly covers the next coffee stop toward Little Manly Beach. Ruby Lane Wholefoods Cafe is the wholefoods alternative in town.
