Coffee by the Beans is a boutique roaster and cafe at 394 Henley Beach Road in Lockleys, and it roasts its own beans on site, which is why the coffee carries the reputation it does. For dog owners the arrangement is simple: dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating at the front, while the indoor area is restricted to service dogs.

The dog setup

The front tables suit a casual post-walk coffee rather than a long brunch. The space is relatively intimate, so it works best for settled dogs, and there is no confirmed water bowl service, so carry your own on warm mornings. The tables sit close to Henley Beach Road traffic, so a reactive dog is better positioned between you and the building than at the kerb edge.

The vibe

This is a roaster first. Expect Syphon, Chemex, V60, cold brew and espresso alongside the usual milk options, all built on beans roasted a few metres from where you sit. The food cabinet runs to cinnamon scrolls, croissants, muffins and baguettes, which covers the takeaway end rather than a full kitchen. Staff are friendly and quick, and early hours make it a proper pre-work or post-walk stop.

Getting there and parking

There is free dedicated off-street parking on site, with street parking on the surrounding residential blocks as backup, which is unusual for the Henley Beach Road strip. Note the hours: it runs 6am to 12:30pm Tuesday to Friday, 7am to 12:30pm Saturday, and closes Sunday and Monday, so plan the dog walk accordingly.

Close by with the dogs

Pair the coffee with an off-leash session at West Beach Dog Beach (Northern Boundary) a short drive towards the coast, or keep it closer at the Tedder Reserve Pooch Park. For a leashed river option, the River Torrens Linear Park Fenced Dog Park is nearby, and Yellow Matter in Brooklyn Park is a second dog-friendly coffee a short drive north.
