West Beach Dog Beach (Northern Boundary)

This 1.2 kilometre stretch of West Beach in Adelaide's west runs off-leash from the Anderson Avenue boat ramp north to Hamra Avenue, managed by the City of West Torrens. It is quieter than Henley Beach next door, with calm shallow water and dunes backing the sand.

Leash status

Dogs are allowed off-leash around the clock provided they stay under effective control, by voice command or close proximity. The off-leash zone runs strictly between the Anderson Avenue boat ramp in the south and Hamra Avenue in the north, so stray past either boundary and leash up. Keep dogs off the dunes to protect the vegetation, and be ready to clip the lead back on near the playground areas.

Water and terrain

The water is calm and shallow, typical of the gulf-facing metro beaches, and the sand is firm going near the waterline. The beach is widest and easiest for walking at low tide; at high tide the sand narrows considerably. Poop bags and bins sit at the main access points, and beach showers plus a water fountain are at the Anderson Avenue entrance in Harold and Cynthia Anderson Reserve, handy for a post-swim rinse.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along Seaview Road, with the best spots near Hamra Avenue and near the Adelaide Sailing Club by the Anderson Avenue boat ramp. Adelaide Metro buses 111, 112, 115 and 117 run along Military Road and Seaview Road, and the coastal linear path runs parallel to the beach for an easy walk or ride in.

When to go

Weekends and summer evenings, roughly 6 to 8pm, draw the biggest crowds; weekday mornings and Tuesday evenings are quietest. On days over 32 degrees, some beach facilities close earlier than usual, so do not count on a late rinse on a scorcher.

While you're out there

Beach Break Cafe on Seaview Road has dog-friendly outdoor seating right on the beachfront, and Scootz Cafe on Burbridge Road is another solid coffee stop nearby. If you want a fenced run rather than open beach, Grange Forest Park Fenced Dog Park is a short drive north.
