Glenelg North Dog-Friendly Beach

The Glenelg North Dog-Friendly Beach runs along the sandy Patawalonga frontage beside the West Beach boat ramp, a quieter, locals-first stretch of sand a short walk north of the main Glenelg tourist strip. Off-leash access applies most of the year, and the seasonal detail that decides your visit is the daylight saving window.

Leash status

Outside daylight saving, roughly April to September, dogs run off lead through the day under City of Holdfast Bay rules. During daylight saving the sand flips to on-lead between 10am and 8pm, with off-lead hours overnight and in the morning, so plan summer visits around the edges of the day.

Effective voice control is the standing requirement at all times, and any hooded plover breeding closures override the off-lead access. Check the signage at the access points on arrival. Stick to the sand and boardwalks because the dune vegetation is off limits.

The vibe

Wide, open and noticeably calmer than the jetty end of Glenelg, with a regular local morning crew. The flat approach and shallow water suit dogs of any age, and the paved path along the top of the beach with bench seating gives non-swimmers something to do.

Pepsi: summer morning, before 10am, is the whole point of this beach. By late morning the on-lead clock starts and the sand gets crowded.

Getting there and parking

Street parking lines the Esplanade and the area near the boat ramp, and it fills on warm weekends. It is a 20 to 30 minute drive from the Adelaide CBD via Anzac Highway or Airport Road, or the tram to Moseley Square followed by a 15 to 20 minute walk north. Buses on Tapleys Hill Road also work.

While you are out there

Little Eatery Glenelg on Adelphi Terrace is the close coffee stop, and Beach Break Cafe sits north at West Beach. For another off-lead run, the West Beach Dog Beach continues along the same coastline.
