La Bottega Leichhardt

La Bottega Leichhardt is an Italian-inspired cafe on the Norton Street strip in Sydney's Inner West, where dogs are genuinely part of the front-of-house culture. It opens early on weekdays, 7:30am to 3pm, and from 8am to 2pm on weekends, which makes it an easy first stop on a morning walk through Leichhardt's Little Italy.

Dogs are welcome at the alfresco tables along the footpath, not inside. The outdoor area runs under umbrellas, so there is shade through the middle of the day, and the staff are used to four-legged regulars; treats often appear without asking. Bring your own water bowl to be safe, and expect attention: Norton Street footpath traffic means plenty of pats and hello. The kitchen leans Italian across brunch and lunch, with focaccia, eggs benedict and corn fritters among the regulars, plus coffee and cocktails if the morning stretches on.

The vibe

Busy and lively is the honest description, and that matters for dog owners. Weekends are walk-in only with queues for tables by mid-morning, and the strip hums with prams, shoppers and other dogs. A calm, sociable dog will settle happily; a reactive one will find the footpath tables challenging at peak. Weekday mornings before nine are the sweet spot, when tables are free and the street is quieter.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits on Norton Street in the middle of Leichhardt's restaurant strip, a short walk from the Marion light rail stop. Metered parking on Norton Street is limited and in demand, so side streets like Marion Street are the better bet on weekends. Buses run the length of Norton Street from the city.

Pepsi: Go on a weekday morning, take a footpath table, and order before the joggers start doing laps of the strip. The staff will spot the dog before you sit down.

Make a day of it

For a proper off-leash run either side of coffee, Hawthorne Canal Reserve is close by, and the Federal Park Dog Park at Annandale sits on the water a little further east. The Glebe Foreshore Walk turns breakfast into a full morning, and Brothers Ben Cafe at Petersham is another dog-welcoming table one suburb over.
