Brewing Journeys

Brewing Journeys is a small neighbourhood coffee shop in the Howrah Point Shopping Centre at 76 Howrah Road, a couple of minutes' walk up from Little Howrah Beach on Hobart's eastern shore. It is a coffee-and-cake stop rather than a big sit-down kitchen, which makes it the natural bookend to a beach walk with the dog on the lead.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating near the shopping centre entrance. It is a shared centre walkway rather than a dedicated courtyard, and the number of tables is limited, so keep your dog leashed and tucked in close. Water is not guaranteed, so throw a travel bowl in the bag on warm days. Weekend mornings are when the small outside area gets tightest.

The cabinet and the coffee

The drawcard is the sweets cabinet: walnut brownie, choc raspberry brownie, caramel slice and apple crumble slice, all with gluten-free options, plus hedgehog and Dutch apple slices, melting moments, Monte Carlos and Greek coffee biscuits. Muffins are baked daily and there are mixed berry yoghurt pots for something lighter. Coffee is barista-made and comes with a small freckle on the side, the hot chocolate is a local favourite, and iced mochas travel well on a beach day. Valhalla choc tops in flavours like boysenberry, salted caramel and choc peppermint cover the ice-cream corner, and paninis handle anyone who wants actual lunch.

Getting there and parking

The shop sits at Howrah Point with free parking in the shopping centre carpark directly out front. Hours are 7am to 2pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 2pm Saturday, closed Sundays, so it is a weekday and Saturday-morning habit rather than a seven-day one. It runs more as a quick stop than a lingering one; if you want a long stay, the beach below is the better venue for it.

Close by with the dogs

Little Howrah Beach is about 100 metres down the hill for a post-coffee stroll, with Howrah Point Beach nearby as another on-lead option. For off-lead time, the fenced enclosure at Howrah Dog Park is in the suburb itself, and South Street Reserve in Bellerive is a short drive north. If you are pairing coffee stops, Hurricanes Cafe at Bellerive sits along the same shore stretch.

Max: coffee with a freckle on the side and the beach 100 metres away is an easy morning, just bring the water bowl.
