South Street Reserve Fenced Dog Park

South Street Reserve Fenced Dog Park is a City of Clarence off-leash reserve in Bellerive, fully fenced with an open grass field and separate areas for large dogs and small or vulnerable dogs, all a short distance from the waterfront. It is the secure option on Hobart's eastern shore for dogs who need a fence before the lead comes off.

The dog setup

The perimeter is fully fenced, with a water station for dogs, shaded seating for owners and some agility equipment, and entry and parking are wheelchair accessible. Dogs must stay under effective control, meaning within sight and responsive to your commands, even inside the fence. Waste must be removed immediately, with fines for non-compliance, and the open grass field drains well enough to stay usable through a Tasmanian winter. Clarence's exercise area network also includes a designated off-leash space for greyhounds.

Max: even inside a fenced park, effective control means recall that actually works. Do not rely on the fence alone if your dog does not reliably come back when called around other dogs.

Worth knowing

The reserve sits close to the water, and any adjacent beach areas can carry different, seasonal on-leash and off-leash rules to the fenced park itself, so check signage before heading onto the sand. The separation of large and small dog spaces keeps the field usable for nervous or older dogs, and the shade matters on summer afternoons when the open turf has nowhere to hide from the sun.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is off South Street in Bellerive, with street parking generally available nearby, and Clarence suburban bus routes run through Bellerive village a short walk away. The flat approach makes it an easy walk from the surrounding residential streets if you would rather skip the car on a fine day.

The Howrah Dog Park is the neighbouring option if you are working through the eastern shore parks, and Bellerive village has coffee for afterwards, with Moto Vecchia and Cocomo+Co both close by. Weekday mid-mornings are quietest, while weekends and late afternoons from about 3:30 to 5:30pm draw the biggest crowds.
