Cambridge Dog Park

Cambridge Dog Park is a purpose-built 1.5 hectare off-lead facility at 1000 Cambridge Road, next to the Cambridge Oval precinct on Hobart's eastern shore. Opened by Clarence City Council in mid 2026, it gives the area a modern fenced space with two separate exercise zones.

The dog setup

Both zones are fully fenced and entered through air-lock style gates. The main area has grassed open space, natural play features such as logs and rocks, and a walking loop path, while the smaller quiet zone suits older or timid dogs that find busy parks stressful.

Outside the fence the rules change: near the Barilla Rivulet and on the surrounding reserve, dogs go back on lead. There were no bins inside the fenced park when it opened, so carry your own bags and use the bins near the car park.

Max: use both gates as a proper airlock. One dog in, lead off, then the next. It is the whole reason the design works.

Worth knowing

Shade planting is in but still young, so summer visits at midday are a warm affair. The quiet zone is the standout for reactive dogs, since most parks on the eastern shore ask them to cope with the main crowd. As a newer facility, expect the finer details, like bins and shade, to keep improving over the next few seasons. Check the council page before a first visit in case anything has changed since opening.

Getting there and parking

The park is an easy detour off the Tasman Highway at Cambridge Road. Parking is on unsealed ground rather than sealed gravel, which can turn muddy after wet weather, so expect boots rather than sneakers in winter. Arriving from the city side, the turn-off comes up quickly once past the airport strip, so watch the signs rather than relying on the last-second map call.

Make a day of it

Red Square Cafe in the village handles the coffee run, and Smith's Pies is the local institution for a post-park feed. If you are staying overnight, Barilla Holiday Park sits right beside the precinct.
