Smith's Pies

Smith's Pies is a rustic pie shop on Maxwells Road at Cambridge, a short hop off the Tasman Highway near Hobart Airport, and it is one of the more genuinely dog-friendly stops in southern Tasmania. The outdoor lawn and garden seating is set up for exactly this kind of visit, and the pies are the kind people detour for.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome across the outdoor dining area, which means picnic tables on the lawn rather than anything indoors. Keep your dog leashed while you eat. The nice touch is a dog beer treat for visiting dogs, so your dog is not just tolerated but catered for. Shaded spots are available, and the lawn gives a dog room to settle without crowding other tables.

The pies

Traditional Australian pies done with care, flaky pastry across the range and a rotating list of specials. The scallop pie and scallop mornay draw the most praise, with chicken and beef pies and solid sausage rolls filling out the cabinet. It is takeaway-and-sit food at heart, which is exactly what a dog-friendly lawn wants.

Getting there and parking

Free off-street parking is available on site, with easy access straight off the Tasman Highway. It works equally well as a planned stop or an impulse detour on the way to the coast.

Pair it with

The Cambridge Dog Park, a fully fenced off-lead park on Cambridge Road, is only a short drive away, and Seven Mile Beach offers room to walk afterwards with permitted beach paths from the Surf Road reserves. Hours run 9:30am to 5pm weekdays, to 8pm Fridays, closed weekends. A pie on the lawn after a run at the dog park is about as tidy a Tasmanian day out as it gets.
