Hurricanes Cafe

Hurricanes Cafe is the all-day breakfast and lunch spot at 15 Derwent Street, Bellerive, on Hobart's eastern shore right by Blundstone Arena. Formerly known as Plumb Cafe, it draws a steady local crowd for coffee, hearty plates and house-made cakes, and it works well as a rest stop mid-walk around the Bellerive village and shoreline.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the limited outdoor seating out the front, where you can keep an eye on your dog while you eat. Water bowls are provided, and staff have a reputation for making visiting dogs feel at home. Keep your dog on leash at the tables, and because the outdoor area is small, quieter weekday mornings are the safest bet for a table. The cafe is pram friendly too, which tells you the front area is easy to navigate.

Worth knowing

The kitchen runs breakfast, brunch and lunch on coffee from Botero roasters. Regulars single out the corn fritters, the salmon and spinach omelette, the bacon and egg roll and the fish and chips, and there is a rotating cake cabinet plus ice cream for the kids' table. Vegetarian options are covered. On stadium event days the cafe can operate differently around fixtures at the ground, so check the Facebook page before planning a visit during a big match.

Getting there and parking

Hours run 7:30am to 3pm on weekdays and 8am to 2pm on weekends. Derwent Street sits just off Cambridge Road in the Bellerive village, with street and public parking around the village, which fills quickly on weekends, so arriving early helps.

Close by with the dogs

The Bellerive Boardwalk along the marina is a short stroll away and makes a good leash walk before or after coffee. For an off-lead run, South Street Reserve Fenced Dog Park is nearby, and Howrah Dog Park is a few minutes further south. In the village, Moto Vecchia and Cocomo & Co are other dog-friendly coffee options.
