Fat froth

Fat Froth is a tiny espresso bar tucked into the historic Atwell Arcade off Cantonment Street, and the arcade setting is exactly what makes it work with a dog: shaded, off the main-street wind and noise, with tables to settle at while the espresso machine does its thing. It is a weekday-morning kind of spot, not a weekend one.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor arcade seating, which is the practical dog zone given how small the cafe itself is. The arcade keeps the tables out of the Cantonment Street foot traffic, so a dog can lie still without the constant squeeze of prams and shoppers. Staff are friendly and will generally let a water bowl go down, but bring your own to be safe. Keep your dog leashed and tucked close, as the arcade walkway still carries through-traffic.

Coffee and the cabinet

The coffee draws the regulars, and the almond croissant is the standing order alongside toasties, fresh snacks and cakes from the cabinet. Hours run 7am to 2pm Monday to Friday, with the cafe closed on Saturdays and Sundays, so build your Freo dog day around a weekday stop. Mid-morning is the calmest window and the easiest time to land a shaded table with room for a lead.

Getting there and parking

Find it at Shop 9, 3 Cantonment Street, inside the Atwell Arcade, very close to Fremantle Station, so arriving on foot or by train is the easy option. If you drive, street parking on Cantonment Street and the surrounding side streets is paid and turns over quickly through the week.

Close by with the dogs

For a run before the coffee, the South Beach Dog Off Leash Area is a short drive south, and Leighton Beach Dog Exercise Area covers the northern end. Note the City of Fremantle keeps all streets and unsignposted reserves on-lead, so the arcade walk over is a leashed one. GESHA Cafe is another Freo stop that takes dogs.
