Big Elma is a community-minded cafe and small art space on Nicholson Street, easy to spot by its pink frontage. It still works with a dog, but the access has changed, so know the current rule before you go.

The dog setup. Following a Merri-bek council ruling, dogs are no longer allowed in the courtyard or inside. Dogs are welcome at the front footpath tables only. If you want to sit with your dog, that is the spot, so it suits a quick coffee more than a long sit-down with a group.

When to go. Because the dog space is the front footpath, aim for a quieter weekday morning and a shaded table in summer. Confirm the current dog policy when you arrive, as footpath setups can shift with the weather.
