Coburg Bush Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Coburg Bush Reserve, on Bell Street, is a naturalistic bush-style off-leash space rather than a manicured park. It gives dogs open ground and a gravel walking circuit through native plantings, a relaxed alternative to a fenced dog park, with the trade-off that it is largely unfenced.

The dog setup

Dogs must be under effective voice or hand control at all times, and you must carry a lead. Under Merri-bek City Council rules, lead up within 15 metres of any playground or play equipment, within 15 metres of organised sport in progress or barbecue and picnic areas in use, and within 1 metre of shared paths. Bins are provided, but bring your own bags. The reserve is generally open 24/7, though check on-site signage for any council changes.

Max: it is open bush with limited fencing and shared paths, so only go off-lead if recall is solid. On hot days the shade is thin in places, so early morning or evening is kinder.

The vibe

This is bushland walking with your dog free at your side, not fenced-pack socialising. The gravel circuit winds past native plantings and logs, with informal seating along the paths. Busiest on weekday afternoons around 4pm to 6pm and weekend mornings; midday on weekdays is quieter and better for a timid dog.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits off Bell Street near the Urquhart Street intersection. Parking is on the adjacent residential streets, and it is a short walk or quick tram connection from Coburg Station on the Upfield line.

Close by with the dogs

For a more contained run, the Egan Reserve and Bridges Reserve off-leash areas cover other corners of the suburb. For coffee afterwards, the Nicholson Coffee House is a local stop, and the dog-friendly courtyard cafes around Urquhart Street are within walking distance.
