Bridges Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Bridges Reserve is a designated dog off-leash area on Bell Street in Coburg, next to the Coburg Leisure Centre, with open grass and mature trees doing the work of a proper neighbourhood run. It is an around-the-clock off-lead zone under Merri-bek City Council rules, excluding the City Oval section of the precinct, and it suits dogs with reliable recall rather than escape artists.

Off leash status

The reserve is off-leash 24 hours a day, but it is an open area rather than a fully fenced dog park, and it sits against busy Bell Street near the Sydney Road junction. Your dog needs to be under effective voice or hand control the whole time, with a lead carried at all times. City Oval within the reserve is excluded from the off-leash area, and dogs must stay on lead within 15 metres of any playground, barbecue or sporting ground in use.

Max: treat this one as a control-zone run, not a set-and-forget park. If your dog's recall is shaky, clip the lead on near the Bell Street side and work the interior instead.

The vibe

A working local reserve rather than a destination dog park: open lawn for ball throwing, tree shade in summer, and picnic tables and benches for the humans. Council bins are on site but waste bags are not supplied, so bring your own. Weekday mornings and early evenings are the quiet windows; Saturday afternoons draw the biggest crowd, which is either the draw or the dealbreaker depending on your dog.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at the corner of Bell Street and Elm Grove, in the residential pocket between Sydney Road and Nicholson Street. Street parking is available around Elm Grove and the adjoining residential streets, and bus routes along Bell Street stop nearby. The entrance is wheelchair accessible and the ground is flat.

Close by with the dogs

For a secure alternative, Egan Reserve Dog Off Leash Area on Rennie Street adds bushland paths and creek access for a paddle. El Parche Coffee Roasters on Sydney Road is a dog-friendly coffee stop within walking distance, and the Merri Creek Track via Coburg Lake loop is the longer on-lead outing to pair with a morning here.
