El Parche Coffee Roasters Cafe

El Parche is a Latin-leaning specialty roaster in Coburg that roasts its own beans on site, with Colombian and wider Latin American roots behind the espresso blends and rotating single origins. For dog owners the deal is simple: outdoor seating where the lead can clip to a table leg and the coffee is a genuine destination rather than an afterthought.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating area; inside is people-only. Staff are good about a water bowl, though bring your own in summer since the footpath seats are exposed and Coburg afternoons can heat up. The cafe runs 7am to 2:30pm on weekdays and from 8am on weekends, and mid-morning on a weekday is the quiet window.

The coffee and the menu

It rates 4.9 from over a hundred reviews, which for a roaster-cafe is rare. The arepas and arepa-style open sandwiches bring the Latin side of the menu through, and the tuna melt toasty has a following of its own; pastries come from local bakers and there are bagels and banana bread for the quick stop. Filter drinkers get single-origin pour-overs, which is uncommon this far up Sydney Road.

Getting there and the off-lead options

The cafe sits on Harding Street, a short hop from the Sydney Road strip and the Route 19 tram. On-street parking on Sydney Road itself is tight, so the side streets are usually a better bet. For an off-lead run either side of coffee, the Egan Reserve Dog Off Leash Area runs along Merri Creek with a chance of a paddle, and Anderson Reserve is the closer detour. The Merri Creek Track via Coburg Lake Loop is the longer on-lead option.
