The ripple & swirl cafe

The Ripple & Swirl sits on the Esplanade at Christies Beach, directly opposite the sand, with the ocean as the view from the breakfast table. It opens 7am to 3pm every day of the week, and dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables on the footpath and patio. This one leans genuinely dog-friendly rather than merely tolerating leashes, which is why it has become a fixture of the southern beaches walk-and-coffee circuit.

The dog setup

Dogs join you at the outdoor alfresco tables running along the Esplanade side of the cafe; the indoor seating stays people-only. Water bowls are usually on hand and treats often turn up too, which makes a mid-walk stop easy. The outdoor area gets plenty of passing dogs, so a sociable dog will be right at home and a nervous one may prefer an end table away from the foot traffic. Keep your dog on lead and settled in the outdoor zone.

Worth knowing

The kitchen does big, filling breakfasts: a loaded big breakfast with hash browns and all the trimmings, breakfast burgers, bacon and egg rolls and eggs benedict, with burgers, steak sandwiches and fish and chips carrying the lunch side. The coffee holds up and the ocean view does the rest. It is popular with families, and there is a play area for kids, so weekend mid-mornings are the busiest window; earlier is better with a dog.

Getting there and parking

The cafe is at 14 Esplanade, Christies Beach, with free street parking along the Esplanade and beachside car parks nearby, which fill on warm weekends. The beachfront path runs straight past the door, so it slots into a coastal walk without any detour.

Pepsi: Grab a footpath table facing the water and you get the sea breeze, the passing parade of other dogs, and a bowl brought over without asking twice.

While you're out there

The beach across the road includes designated dog exercise areas, and the City of Onkaparinga signs at the access paths spell out the current on-leash and off-leash rules, so read them before letting your dog loose. For an enclosed run, the Symonds Reserve fenced dog park is a short drive south. For a second coffee, Annie's Cafe is in the same suburb and DUKE'S Cafe is just up the coast at Moana.
