O'Sullivan Beach

O'Sullivan Beach is a sandy, boat-ramp-side stretch on Gulf St Vincent about half an hour south of Adelaide, and the sand here runs off-leash as part of the designated dog exercise area that continues along to Christies Beach. For a south-coast suburb it is a surprisingly generous run: one continuous beach rather than a fenced-off token patch.

The dog setup

The off-leash zone under City of Onkaparinga by-laws runs from the southern end of Selway Terrace down to the north side of Heather Street at Christies Beach. Outside daylight saving the beach is off-leash around the clock; during daylight saving months dogs must be back on lead between 10am and 8pm, so summer visits shift to early morning or evening.

Even off-lead, dogs must stay under effective control and return on command, and you are expected to carry bags and pick up straight away, with bins along the coastal access points. Leash up in the car park, on the boat ramp structure and anywhere outside the designated stretch, and watch for seasonal signage, including any nesting protections that close patches of the beach.

Max: check the tide before you go. Low tide exposes the widest, most walkable sand, while high tide narrows the usable beach, especially toward the southern end.

The vibe

Expect a working beach rather than a postcard one: sand mixes with rockier coastline, the boat ramp brings trailer traffic on weekends, and water quality near the ramp can vary after rain because of the stormwater outlets. Locals use it for the long flat run along the water, and the walk from O'Sullivan Beach through to Christies Beach makes a solid outing for a fit dog.

Getting there

Free parking runs along Marine Drive and near the boat ramp, though the ramp car park fills quickly with trailers on fine weekends. Public toilets sit near the ramp, and the coast path links the beach access points if you are coming on foot from the surrounding streets.

Close by with the dogs

North along the coast, the off-leash run at Seaford (Keast Park) Off-Leash Dog Beach makes an easy second stop. For a post-beach coffee, Boy & Bloom at Port Noarlunga South welcomes dogs outside, and if you are making a weekend of it, Christies Beach Tourist Park takes dogs a short walk from the sand.
