DUKE'S Cafe

DUKE'S Cafe operates out of the Moana Surf Life Saving Club on the Adelaide southern coast, with outdoor seating right along the beachfront and clear views over Moana Beach. It is the kind of place where the dog comes straight off the sand with you, shakes off at the table and gets a bowl of water before you have finished ordering. Breakfast and brunch is the go, and the crowd is a relaxed mix of swimmers, walkers and locals.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating area along the front of the club, and staff are used to four-legged visitors. Water bowls are generally out for thirsty dogs, though a portable bowl is a sensible backup on busy summer mornings. It is shared outdoor seating rather than a dedicated dog zone, so keep your dog leashed and settled beside the table. On hot days arrive early; the sea-facing tables fill quickly with the weekend breakfast crowd.

Worth knowing

The menu is short and beach-appropriate: bacon and egg rolls, poached eggs, corn fritters and solid coffee, more about the setting and the coffee than a big kitchen line. Hours are 8am to midday Monday, Tuesday, Friday and 8am to 1pm on weekends, with Wednesday and Thursday closed, so plan the dog beach walk around those days. The club setting also means it is at its best outside of the summer patrol-season crush, when the esplanade is quieter.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits on the Esplanade at Moana, about 40 minutes south of Adelaide, with parking along the esplanade and the adjacent streets. Moana Beach itself is a dog exercise beach with council time rules: during daylight savings dogs must be on lead between 10am and 8pm in the vehicle access zones and can be off-lead under effective control at other times, so the usual pattern here is a beach walk first and breakfast second. Watch for the seasonal on-lead signage around Hooded Plover nesting zones in summer.

Close by with the dogs

O'Sullivan Beach is a short drive north for another coastal leg-stretch, and Sean Power Dog Inn Park at Seaford Heights gives you a fenced option nearby. If you are staying in the area, Moana Beach Tourist Park is right on the same strip.
