Byron Bay Canteen

Byron Bay Canteen is a silver Airstream van parked at 1B Butler Street, and it trades like the short, sharp morning business it is: 6:30am to midday, every day. Regulars queue for locally roasted espresso, crumpets from the Sourdough Crumpet Co, pistachio cinnamon scrolls, croissants and alfajores, all served from a retro van window beside the Ampol service station. If you want the pastries before they are gone and a park for the dog without circling the town centre, this is a morning-first stop.

The dog setup

There is no dine-in room here, which for dog owners is the good news. Everything happens outdoors at the van, so dogs are welcome to wait at the counter while you order, and the regulars mention the owners' own dog as part of the furniture. The orange hot chocolate has a following, and the staff have a reputation for remembering both faces and leads. Treat it as a takeaway stop: order, pat the dog, walk on. Byron Shire Council keeps dogs on lead in public areas outside the designated off lead zones, so this is a leash-on stop on the way to somewhere bigger.

Getting there and parking

Butler Street sits a couple of blocks back from Jonson Street, opposite the police station and close to the Byron Bay train station end of town. Street parking in the surrounding blocks is doable early, and it thins out fast once the town wakes up, which is another reason the pre-9am visit works best.

Close by with the dogs

Grab the crumpets and coffee, then point the dog toward the sand: the Belongil Beach South dog exercise area is a short drive away and gives the dog an off lead session in the intertidal zone. If the morning stretches into brunch, Folk Byron Bay on Ewingsdale Road welcomes dogs in its garden seating, and Wide Open Road Cafe is another local favourite with outdoor tables.
