Hidden Perk

Hidden Perk sits back from the Gold Coast Highway at Shop 5, 15 Ikkina Road in Burleigh Heads, which is exactly how it earned its name. The side-street position keeps the pace down compared with the beachfront strip, and locals rate it for fast coffee, eggs benedict and acai bowls served in generous portions. It is a confirmed dog-friendly cafe, with the outdoor courtyard as the dog zone.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor courtyard and footpath tables, and the accepted way in with a dog is via the laneway directly into the courtyard seating rather than through the indoor front of house. Water bowls are typically available, though it pays to carry a backup in the Queensland heat. Dogs stay on a lead and settled close to the table while other patrons are eating.

Max: the laneway entrance means no squeezing past the indoor tables, and a water bowl landed on the ground before I had even sat down.

The vibe

This is a proper local cafe rather than a tourist stop: counter service at pace, a straightforward breakfast and lunch menu, and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options alongside the classics. The rosti and the breakfast wraps come up regularly as order standbys, and the coffee has a strong word-of-mouth following in the suburb. Doors open at 5:30am daily, with the kitchen running through to 1:30pm, seven days.

Getting there and parking

Parking is limited but usually workable in front of the shops or on the street opposite, and being a few blocks off the highway it rarely chokes like the beachfront. The Burleigh Heads bus stops along the highway put you within a short walk.

Pair it with

The cafe sits well for a dog-day loop: Tallebudgera Offleash Dog Beach is a few minutes south for a swim, and Melaleuca Dog Park in Palm Beach is another off-lead option nearby. For the coffee run on another day, Caffeination Burleigh and Nook Espresso are both dog-friendly Burleigh Heads neighbours.
