The Grumpy Barista

The Grumpy Barista is a busy corner cafe in a pink heritage building on Henderson Road, Alexandria, pouring Toby's Estate coffee from a plant-filled room with marble tables. It is genuinely dog-welcoming, allowing dogs inside as well as at the outdoor tables, which is rarer than it should be in inner Sydney.

The dog setup

The house rules are clear and worth respecting: dogs stay on the floor, never on chairs, benches or cushions, kept on lead at all times, with any treats or water given at floor level and no sharing plates or cutlery. Bring your own bowl. These rules keep the room workable for everyone, including guests with allergies, and they are enforced politely but consistently.

Max: read the floor-only rule before you sit down. Settle your dog at your feet on lead and keep treats off the table, and you will both be welcome back.

The vibe

The coffee is rich and creamy, and the brunch menu is the draw: eggs benedict, a bacon and egg roll, croissant French toast and acai bowls, all served generously. It runs 7am to 2pm on weekdays, to 3pm on weekends, and it is a bustling room, so best for dogs who settle on lead amid a bit of noise and foot traffic.

Getting there

The cafe is at 34 Henderson Road, Alexandria. Street parking exists but gets busy on weekends, and the Alexandria streets around it are pleasant to stroll. The real advantage is the location relative to Sydney Park, which is an easy walk for a run before or after.

Make a day of it
