The Copper Mill

The Copper Mill is a busy, rustic cafe at 338-356 Mitchell Road in Alexandria, running 7am to 2.30pm weekdays and from 7.30am on weekends. It pairs solid specialty coffee with a Mediterranean-leaning brunch menu, and the street-side outdoor seating is where the dogs sit, in a suburb that takes its cafe culture seriously.

The dog setup

The footpath tables and street-side benches are the dog-friendly zone, on lead and settled under or beside the table. The cafe has a strong dog-friendly reputation, and staff are known to keep treats behind the counter for regular four-legged customers; bring your own bowl, though they will usually help with water. It is a lively stretch of footpath with bikes and foot traffic, so it suits a sociable dog that can stay calm through the bustle. Inside is off limits under the standard NSW food rules.

Worth knowing

The menu leans creative breakfast and lunch: brisket hash, a reuben sandwich, bacon and egg rolls on fresh sourdough, and genuinely good vegan options including vegan halloumi, which is rarer than it sounds. The carrot cake has a following of its own. This is a popular local brunch spot rather than a quiet one, and weekend outdoor seats go quickly, so arrive early or expect to wait.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits on Mitchell Road in the middle of Alexandria's industrial-turned-cafe strip, about ten minutes from the CBD outside peak hour. Street parking runs along Mitchell Road and the side streets but fills fast on weekends, so allow time. Buses run straight along Mitchell Road, and Green Square station is a walkable option from the northern end.

Make a day of it

La Cachette Cafe on the same road is the dog-friendly backup if the seats are gone, and Meet Gerard adds another option nearby. For a proper run, Harry Noble Reserve at Erskineville sits beside the parklands and works as an off-leash stop before brunch.
