Calmer Cafe

Calmer Cafe is a neighbourhood cafe and wine bar on Fawkner Street in Aberfeldie, and it goes further than most on dogs: regulars report four-legged visitors welcomed at the outdoor tables and inside the retro-styled room as well, with water bowls kept handy and a treats jar at the counter. It is a genuine dog local rather than a tolerant footpath setup.

Water bowls are typically out, and the treats jar by the counter is a known feature, so ask staff before helping yourself if your dog gets pushy around food. If the room is full or busy, the footpath tables work just as well.

The cafe runs 6am starts on weekdays, and from Thursday to Saturday evenings the space switches into wine bar mode with a popular parma night. Staff friendliness is the recurring theme in reviews, alongside solid coffee and brunch. If you want the calm version, weekday mornings are a different world from the Thursday to Saturday evenings.

The cafe is at 2E Fawkner Street, Aberfeldie. Street parking on Fawkner Street and the surrounding residential streets is usually straightforward, and bus stops on Buckley Street are a short walk away.

Close by with the dogs

Aberfeldie Park Dog Off Leash Area is down towards the river for a proper run, and the Maribyrnong River loop makes an easy on-lead circuit to pair with coffee. Bent Street Fenced Dog Park is another option just across the boundary in Moonee Ponds.
