Pottsville Dog Beach

Pottsville Dog Beach is the off-leash stretch of South Pottsville Beach, running from about 200 metres south of the main patrolled swimming area down to 200 metres north of Black Rocks. It is wide, clean white sand with easy ocean access, and it is one of the more generous off-leash beaches on the Tweed Coast.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash within the marked zone but must stay under effective voice control, meaning they come back the moment you call. You still need to carry a leash with you at all times, including to put it on for the walk in and out of the off-leash zone. Pick up and dispose of all droppings immediately. Declared dangerous, menacing or restricted dogs are not permitted. Dogs are prohibited on the main patrolled beach, the Nature Preserve path, the Pottsville Environment Park, and the foreshore around Ambrose Brown Park and Mooball Creek, so check the signage before you let your dog off-lead.

What's there. Waste bins sit at the main beach access tracks, and a few sandy paths cross the dunes from the parking area down to the sand. There is no water tap, shower or shade structure on the beach itself, so bring your own water bowl and something for shade if you are staying a while.

Getting there. By car, take the Pottsville exit off the M1 and follow the road to Seabreeze Boulevard, which is the main access point for the off-leash section. Roadside parking is casual and fills up quickly on weekends and holidays. Local buses run into the town centre, but you will still have a short walk to the beach from there.

Nearby with the dogs. Black Rocks, just north, is another off-leash stretch worth combining with a Pottsville visit. For a coffee stop, Black Drop Cafe in Pottsville has outdoor seating that regularly hosts dogs, and Jack Gray Cafe in nearby Kingscliff is a well-known pet-friendly option. Wooyung Beach Holiday Park, about 6 kilometres away, takes dogs if you need somewhere to stay.

Go early morning or late afternoon on weekdays if you want the sand to yourself. Low tide opens up much more beach to walk and run on, while high tide narrows things considerably, so time your visit around the tide chart if you can. Good for dogs that are solid on recall, since the off-leash zone borders family beach areas and conservation land rather than being fully fenced.
