Noosa Spit Dog Beach Car Park

The Noosa Spit Dog Beach Car Park on Claude Batten Drive is the practical entry point for the off-leash riverfront strip locals call Doggy Beach. Park here and the sand is a few steps away, on the river side of Noosa Spit where the Noosa River runs calm and shallow into the sound.

Leash status

The beach and foreshore on the riverside of Claude Batten Drive are a designated off-leash exercise area at all hours under Noosa Shire Council rules, with dogs under effective voice control the whole time. Keep the lead on through the car park, on the sealed path and along the road verge before you reach the sand. Dogs are barred from the marked bathing reserves and patrolled swimming areas, and from the dunes. Council also applies its usual limit of two dogs per person.

Max: clip the lead back on the moment you leave the sand. The path and road verge back to the car park are on-leash zones and the rangers do patrol on busy weekends.

Water and terrain

This is a river beach, not a surf beach. The water on the river side is calm and shallow, which suits paddlers, waders and dogs that would rather splash than swim out. Shade trees and picnic shelters sit along the foreshore strip. At low to mid tide more sandbar opens up for fetch, while after heavy rain or a strong incoming tide the current through the river mouth can pick up, so keep swimming dogs close to shore on those days.

Getting there and parking

From Hastings Street, follow Noosa Parade onto Claude Batten Drive and the car park sits directly alongside the beach at the end of the spit. Parking is free but the lot is small and fills early on weekend mornings, so an early start is worth it in summer. Translink buses stop along Noosa Parade, leaving a short walk to the reserve.

Worth knowing

Bring your own water and poo bags; bins and taps are spread along the reserve but not at every spot. The whole spit is a shared recreation reserve, so you will also meet walkers, fishermen and kayakers crossing between the river side and the ocean side. Keep dogs off the dune vegetation, which is a protected nesting and stabilisation zone.

When to go

Weekday mornings and the last couple of hours before sunset are the quiet windows; weekends between about 8am and 11am are the busiest stretch. School holidays fill the whole spit by mid morning, so aim for dawn or dusk if your dog needs space to run.

While you're out there

The northern end of Sunshine Beach is a second off-leash option a short drive south, with open ocean sand for dogs that like a bigger run.
