Horseshoe Beach

Horseshoe Beach sits at the base of Nobbys Breakwall at the Newcastle harbour entrance, and it is the city's primary off-leash dog beach. The draw is simple: it is off-leash 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on calm harbour water with almost no surf, which makes it one of the few spots locals trust for nervous swimmers and small dogs.

The rules. The beach is leash-free at all hours. The off-leash zone is the sand only: dogs must be leashed in the adjacent car park, on the Nobbys Breakwall, and on the footpath linking the beach to the city. Dogs are not permitted on the patrolled Nobbys Beach or in any playground areas. Effective voice control is required at all times, and you must pick up after your dog, with bins provided.

The water. This is harbour, not ocean, so the water is sheltered and usually flat, which is the whole point. Low tide opens up a much larger run of firm sand; high tide shrinks the usable beach considerably, so time a visit around the tide if you want room to throw a ball. You will often see ships moving through the harbour entrance and, on a good day, dolphins.

What is there. Drinking water and waste bins are on site, and a large paid car park sits right beside the beach. Natural shade is limited, so bring your own on hot days, along with a water bowl.

Getting there. Reach it via Horseshoe Beach Road off the Nobbys Beach precinct. The car park is paid and fills fast on warm weekends. It is also an easy walk from the Newcastle city centre along the harbour foreshore, which avoids the parking scramble entirely.

Watch-outs. Hot sand in summer can burn paws, the breakwall and car park are leash-required zones that catch people out, and busy mornings mean a lot of dogs in a small space. Keep an eye on recall if your dog is reactive.

When to go. Weekday mornings at low tide are the calmest and roomiest. Sunny weekends and the late afternoon are the busiest. Good for nervous swimmers, small dogs, and anyone who wants flat water rather than surf.
