The Pavilion Kitchen

The Pavilion Kitchen, known locally as Pavilion by Slingtown, is a rustic warehouse-style cafe at 150 Young Street in Carrington, a tight pocket of inner Newcastle wedged between Throsby Creek and the harbor. It runs all-day breakfast and lunch from 7am, closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and the sunny outdoor courtyard is where dogs are welcome while you work through the coffee list.

The dog setup

Dogs settle into the outdoor courtyard rather than the indoor warehouse space, and water bowls are generally available outside. The courtyard has room to spread out, a relaxed family feel with a small play area for kids, and enough space that a dog at your feet is not in anyone's way. As with any courtyard cafe, it is worth confirming the dog policy with staff if you are bringing a large or excitable dog.

On the menu

The kitchen does creative takes on cafe classics, with hearty lunch options such as the savory meatball sub and spiced pakora fritters, add-ons like avocado, and house-made gelato plus rotating baked goods such as fresh banana bread for the sweet end. Coffee is roasted in house under the Slingtown name, and there is a short beer and wine list if the visit drifts toward the afternoon. It is a popular spot for friend catch-ups, so weekends can fill quickly.

Getting there and parking

Free street parking is available along Young Street and the surrounding Carrington blocks, and the cafe is pram friendly with flat access. From Wickham or Islington it is an easy walk, and the light rail stops within reach if you would rather leave the car at home.

Close by with the dogs

Carrington Foreshore at the end of Hargrave Street has a large grassed off-leash area by the water, leash-free between sunrise and sunset under City of Newcastle rules. Across the canal, the Islington dog off-leash area is about 1km away with shade, water stations and a creek edge for a splash. The Throsby Creek foreshore walk links the suburb toward Newcastle for a longer on-lead route, and Ground Up Espresso on the same street is a dog-friendly backup for a second coffee.
