Horseshoe Beach, listed in our directory as Dogs Beach, is Newcastle's primary designated off-leash swimming spot for dogs. Sitting on Horseshoe Beach Road right near the harbour and Nobby's Beach, its defining feature is the calm, protected water. That sheltered stretch makes it a strong choice for dogs who are nervous around waves, and the sandy shoreline keeps swimming conditions gentle. It is a genuinely social, high-traffic location where owners and dogs mix throughout the day.
The rules. Dogs are permitted off-leash 24/7 within the designated Horseshoe Beach area. Owners must keep their dogs within that boundary and off neighbouring patrolled beaches. Maintain control of your dog at all times, bag and bin all waste immediately, and note that dogs are not allowed on the Newcastle Memorial Walk.
What is there. Free parking is available in a paved lot directly adjacent to the beach. A faucet and shower provide fresh drinking water and a place to wash sand off your dog before you leave. Picnic benches sit on the grassed areas, and public toilets are located nearby.

Getting there. Drive in via Horseshoe Bend Road, off Wharf Road near the Nobby's Beach carpark. If you are catching public transport, it is a short walk from either the Nobby's Beach bus stop or Newcastle Beach Light Rail station, roughly 10 to 15 minutes on foot.
Nearby with the dogs. If you are making a day of it, these PawScapes-listed venues are worth pairing with your beach visit:
- AJ's at Honeysuckle - cafe, Newcastle
- QT Newcastle - dog-friendly stay, Newcastle
- The Crown & Anchor Hotel - pub, Newcastle
When to go. Weekdays are usually quiet, while Sunday mornings draw the biggest crowds. Check the tide chart before you head out: low tide exposes far more sand, whereas high tide compresses the usable area significantly. Always scan the dunes for shorebird nesting zones so you steer your dog clear.
