Stockton Off-Leash Dog Area

The Stockton Off-Leash Dog Area at Pitt Street Reserve sits at the southern tip of the Stockton peninsula, a flat grass reserve with harbour views and one of just two council leash-free zones in the suburb. Little Beach, a calm stretch of sand with shallow water, runs right alongside, so a run on the grass can turn into a swim without moving the car.

Leash status

The reserve is leash-free from sunrise to sunset under City of Newcastle's leash-free rules. Your dog must be accompanied and supervised the whole time and controllable without a lead, which in practice means reliable recall. Declared dangerous and restricted breeds are not permitted in leash-free areas, droppings must be collected, and dogs must stay at least 10 metres from any playground. Rangers do patrol and penalties apply, so keep to the signed zone rather than the whole reserve.

Water and terrain

The ground is flat, open grass with room for a proper sprint, and the water bin marked on the council's leash-free map covers waste. Dedicated dog facilities stop about there, so bring your own water and bowl. The reserve is unfenced, with the wharf, streets and a playground all close by, and Little Beach at its edge is unfenced water. That combination suits confident dogs with good recall; for new rescues or adolescents, work a long line first.

Getting there

Follow Pitt Street off King Street to the reserve at the southern end; parking is straightforward most days. From the Newcastle side, the ferry to Stockton wharf drops you a couple of minutes' walk away, which makes this an easy car-free outing, though check Newcastle Transport's rules on travelling with dogs before you board.

While you're out there

Little Beach is directly alongside for a calm-water swim after the run, and the on-leash foreshore extends the walk north. Stockton's other leash-free spot, the Ballast Ground, sits on the river side about a kilometre away, and NRMA Stockton Beach Holiday Park next door takes dogs on its sites.
