The Stockton Off-Leash Dog Area at Pitt St Reserve, off King Street at the southern tip of the peninsula, is one of just two council leash-free areas in Stockton. It is open grass with harbour views, a short stroll from the ferry wharf, and the calm sand of Little Beach is right alongside for a post-run swim.
The rules. Leash-free from sunrise to sunset. City of Newcastle's standard conditions apply: dogs must be accompanied, supervised and controllable without a lead, declared dangerous and restricted breeds are not permitted, all droppings must be picked up, and dogs must stay at least 10 metres from any playground. The areas are patrolled and penalties apply, so keep to the signed zone.
What's there. Flat, open grass with room for a proper run and a dog waste bin marked on the council's leash-free map. Dedicated dog facilities stop about there, so bring your own water and bowl. The reserve is unfenced, and the wharf and surrounding streets are close.

Getting there. Follow Pitt Street off King Street to the reserve; parking is straightforward most days. From the Newcastle side, take the ferry to Stockton wharf and it is a couple of minutes on foot, but check Newcastle Transport's pet rules before boarding with a dog.
Nearby with the dogs. Little Beach is directly alongside for a calm-water swim. NRMA Stockton Beach Holiday Park is at 3 Pitt Street next door and takes dogs on its sites. Stockton's other leash-free area, the Ballast Ground, sits on the river side about a kilometre north, and the on-leash foreshore links the two.
When to go. Weekday mornings are mostly empty grass and locals; sunny weekend mornings are the social peak. Off-leash ends at sunset. A good first stop to burn energy before trying the beach.
