Stockton On-Leash Dog Area

The Stockton On-Leash Dog Area covers the river foreshore parkland around Fullerton Street: a flat, harbour-front stretch with views across the Hunter to central Newcastle. Treat it as the connecting walk between Stockton's two leash-free grounds rather than a destination in its own right, with the lead on the whole way.

The rules

Leads on at all times here. City of Newcastle only permits off-lead exercise inside its designated leash-free areas, and at Stockton those are the adjoining Ballast Ground and Pitt Street Reserve near the ferry. The basics still apply: pick up after your dog, stay at least 10 metres from playground equipment, and respect any signed no-dog zones. Newcastle's leash-free hours run sunrise to sunset unless signed otherwise, and dangerous or restricted dogs are barred from those zones.

The walk

The foreshore path is flat the whole way, an easy lead walk from the Stockton shops or the ferry wharf, and early or late in the day gives you cooler paths and the better light across the water. It suits lead-only dogs, dogs recovering from injury and puppies still learning their manners.

Getting there and parking

Street parking is easy off Fullerton Street, and the Stockton ferry from Newcastle puts you a short walk from the southern end.

Close by with the dogs

The Stockton off-leash dog area at the Ballast Ground sits right alongside for when the lead needs to come off, and Little Beach is a short walk south near the ferry for a paddle.
