Little Beach

Little Beach is the small harbour beach at Stockton's southern corner, right by the ferry wharf, and it is where local dogs come to swim. The water is river-flat, the sand is gentle, and the adjoining parkland is one of City of Newcastle's two designated leash-free areas in Stockton, making this the calm-water alternative to the surf beaches across the harbour.

The rules. Council's named leash-free areas at Stockton are Pitt St Reserve (off King Street), which adjoins Little Beach, and the Ballast Ground on the river side. Off-leash runs sunrise to sunset. Dogs must stay under effective control and return on command, declared dangerous and restricted breeds are barred, droppings must be picked up, and dogs must keep at least 10 metres from playgrounds. The beach itself is signed on the ground rather than named on the council list, so follow the signage and keep off-leash play inside the marked area. Rangers patrol and fines apply.

The water. Harbour swimming, not surf. The shallows are calm and the entry is gradual, so dogs that hate waves can actually enjoy themselves here. Low tide opens up the most sand for fetch; at high tide the strip narrows but the swimming stays easy.

Getting there. Come in via Mitchell Street at the southern end of Stockton; street parking is close but fills on sunny weekends. On foot it is a couple of minutes from the Stockton ferry wharf; if you want to bring the dog across from Newcastle, check Newcastle Transport's current pet rules before boarding.

Nearby with the dogs. The grassed Stockton Off-Leash Dog Area at Pitt St Reserve is effectively next door, and the river-side Ballast Ground off-leash area is about a kilometre north. Staying over, NRMA Stockton Beach Holiday Park takes dogs on its sites and is a short walk away. Across the water, Horseshoe Beach is Newcastle's classic off-leash swim.

When to go. Early weekday mornings are quietest; weekend mid-mornings bring families and the parking gets tight. Aim for a falling tide for the most beach. Best suited to nervous swimmers, small dogs and older dogs that want a paddle without surf.
