Dog Beach/Off Lead

Maslin Beach sits roughly 45 minutes south of Adelaide CBD on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and the northern end of this stretch of sand is the reason to make the drive. Dogs are permitted off-leash under effective control along this northern section, backed by striking red cliffs and generally calm, clear water. It is a scenic, quiet shoreline that earns its reputation for early morning and sunset walks.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash at the northern end of the beach provided they are under strict voice control and you carry a leash, per SA local council guidelines. During daylight savings, from October to April, dogs must be on-leash on all beaches between 10am and 8pm. Check local signage for additional restrictions near cliffs and sensitive habitat. Pets are not allowed on the adjacent boardwalk areas. The southern end of Maslin Beach is Australia's first nudist beach, so keep dogs on-leash or strictly under control if you venture in that direction.

Terrain and water. The beach is best at low tide, when there is plenty of firm sand at the base of the cliffs. High tide leaves very little sand, so check the tide charts before you set off. The water is generally calm, but watch for surf conditions during rough weather.

Access and amenities. Ample parking is available along Gulf Parade, with the main off-leash access via the Frank Hilton Reserve area or stairs leading down to the sand. Public toilets and water stations are available at the main access point. Be prepared for a steep climb: the cliff paths down to the beach require a bit of effort on the return trip. Public transit is limited, with Seaford the nearest train station, requiring a short ride-share or drive to reach the beach.

Make a day of it. Pair the beach with a post-walk coffee or meal at nearby DUKE'S Cafe in Moana or Goodness Coffee Co in Aldinga. If your dog still has energy to burn, head to the Symonds Reserve Fenced Dog Park at Aldinga Beach, or extend your stay overnight at the Moana Beach Tourist Park.

When to go. Arrive early morning for space and the best sand at low tide. The beach gets popular on weekends and summer afternoons, and daylight savings on-leash hours lock out the middle of the day from October to April. Good for fit, confident dogs and owners who do not mind a steep return climb.
