Maslin Beach Off-Leash Beach (Northern End)

Maslin Beach runs beneath red cliffs about 45 minutes south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and its northern end is a designated off-leash zone that operates year round. It is a scenic, usually calm stretch of sand that rewards early morning and sunset walks more than midday trips.

The rules

Under the City of Onkaparinga's dog by-law, the off-leash area runs from the northern side of Broadbeach Drive north towards Ochre Point, with no seasonal time cut-off at this dedicated zone. Elsewhere on council beaches the daylight savings restrictions bite, with on-leash hours between 10am and 8pm from October to April, so the boundary matters.

Even off the lead, dogs must stay under effective voice or hand control and you must carry a leash. Check signage near the cliffs and sensitive habitat, and keep dogs off the adjacent boardwalk areas. The southern end of the beach is Australia's first official nudist beach, so head north of the boundary if you would rather not explain that to your dog walker.

Max: know where Broadbeach Drive is before you unclip. The nudist boundary is south and the off-leash zone is north, and mixing up the two directions is an awkward conversation either way.

Sand and water

The beach is at its best at low tide, when firm sand at the base of the cliffs makes for easy running and long ball games. High tide strips most of the sand against the cliff line, so check tide charts before you commit. The water is generally calm and clear along this stretch, and summer mornings are cooler and quieter than the afternoon crowd.

Getting there and parking

Access to the dog end is off Gulf Parade, with parking near the coastal path and signed access down to the sand. The walk from the car to the water is short, and stairs and paths handle the cliff descent. Bring your own water and bags, as facilities at the northern end are basic.

Make a day of it

A few minutes north, Symonds Reserve Fenced Dog Park gives a secure run when the tide is high, and Breeze Cafe & Bar in Aldinga Beach handles the post-beach coffee. Travelling with the van, Aldinga Beach Holiday Park accepts dogs.
