Flinders Dog Beach

Flinders Dog Beach is the off-leash stretch of Western Port sand at the northern end of Flinders township, running from the beach access at the end of Spindrift Avenue to about 100 metres north of Flinders Jetty. It is leash-free 24 hours a day, year round, with wide sand flats and rock pools that open up at low tide.

The rules

The green zone runs from the Spindrift Avenue access path to roughly 100 metres north of the jetty, and off-lead applies at any time in any season under Mornington Peninsula Shire's dog rules.

Past those markers, dogs are on lead on the rest of Flinders beach, and during daylight saving the on-lead sections close to dogs entirely between 9am and 7pm. The ocean-facing coastline towards Portsea falls inside Mornington Peninsula National Park, which is no-dogs at all times.

Max: the on-lead stretch either side of the green zone is easy to miss when you are following the crowd. Check the boundary markers, not just where other dogs are running.

The water and terrain

Western Port gives you gently sloping sand and a mild swell, easier going for nervous swimmers than the Bass Strait beaches further along the peninsula. Low tide exposes broad flats and rock pools that dogs work through for hours, while high tide narrows the usable beach considerably, so time the visit around the tide chart rather than the clock.

Getting there

It is about 90 minutes from Melbourne via the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and Frankston-Flinders Road. Parking sits on Spindrift Avenue near the access path and in the car park closer to the pier, and public transport does not reach the beach directly.

Close by with the dogs

Flinders village is a short walk away with a handful of cafes that take dogs at outdoor tables, though policies shift, so confirm when you book. If the tide is wrong for the beach, the fenced run at Flinders Fenced Dog Park is in the same township.

When to go

Go early or late in daylight saving to stay clear of the summer closure window on the surrounding sand, and aim for a low tide if you want maximum flat and rock pools. Bring your own water, because on-beach facilities are limited.
