Flinders Dog Beach

Flinders Dog Beach is the off-leash stretch of Western Port sand at the northern end of Flinders township, running from the beach access at the end of Spindrift Avenue to about 100 metres north of Flinders Jetty. It is leash-free 24 hours a day, year-round, with wide sand flats and rock pools that open up at low tide.

The rules. The leash-free zone runs from the Spindrift Avenue access path to roughly 100 metres north of the jetty. Off-lead is permitted here at any time, any season. Past that point, and on the rest of Flinders beach, dogs must be on-lead, and during daylight saving the on-lead sections are closed to dogs entirely between 9am and 7pm. The coastline between Flinders and Portsea falls inside Mornington Peninsula National Park, which is a no-dog zone at all times. Rules are set by Mornington Peninsula Shire and worth checking before you go, since boundaries and hours are reviewed periodically.

The water and terrain. Expect gently sloping sand and a mild bay swell on the Western Port side, easier going for nervous swimmers than the ocean-facing beaches further along the peninsula. Low tide exposes broad sand flats and rock pools that dogs tend to love; at high tide the usable beach narrows considerably, so time your visit around the tide chart rather than the clock.

Getting there. It is about 90 minutes from Melbourne CBD via the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and Frankston-Flinders Road. Parking is available on Spindrift Avenue near the access path and in the car park closer to the pier; public transport does not reach the beach directly, so driving is the practical option.

Nearby with the dogs. Flinders village is a short walk from the beach and has a handful of dog-friendly cafes, including Georgie Bass Cafe and Cookery and the Village Cafe and Wine Bar on Cook Street, both known for welcoming dogs to outdoor tables. Confirm current pet policy and seating when you book, since cafe rules can change.

When to go. Early morning or late afternoon avoids both the daylight-saving on-lead prohibition window and the busiest sun-seeking crowds. Aim for low tide if you want maximum sand and rock pools to explore, and bring your own water, since on-beach facilities are limited.
