What visitors mention
The off-leash zone at the northern end of Coolum Beach runs around Stumers Creek, where a shallow, calm creek meets open surf beach. That mix is the draw: nervous swimmers and small dogs paddle in the creek, while energetic dogs get a long stretch of sand to run.
The rules. From 3 July 2026 the Sunshine Coast Council requires dogs to be on-leash from the car park until they are at least 10 metres beachside of it, then off-leash under effective control beyond that point. The off-leash stretch extends roughly 3km north and south of the creek. Dogs are not permitted on the patrolled main Coolum Beach to the south. Bag and bin all waste.
What is there. A large free car park sits at the end of Stumers Creek Road, with public toilets nearby, a tap or hose to rinse sand and salt off, and accessible parking bays. Natural shade is very limited, so bring your own.
The water. The creek is best at low tide, when it opens into wide, shallow sandbanks that are safe for small or timid dogs. At high tide the creek mouth runs deeper with a stronger current, so keep a closer eye on swimmers.
Getting there. Drive to the end of Stumers Creek Road off David Low Way. The car park fills fast on weekend mornings. TransLink buses run along David Low Way, leaving a moderate walk to the entrance.

Go mid-week or early, or late afternoon, for room to move. Saturday and Sunday mornings are the busiest. Good for confident beach runners and cautious creek paddlers alike.
