Boambee off dog lead beach

Boambee Beach is a long open-ocean run on the southern edge of Coffs Harbour, off-leash along its full 5.7 km from Corambirra Point down to Boambee Creek. It is wide, sandy and unpatrolled, popular with joggers, horse trainers and four-wheel drivers as well as dogs, with a sheltered tidal creek at the southern end for calmer water play.

The rules. Dogs must be under effective voice control or supervision at all times. Clean up after your dog; bring your own bags, as supplies at access points can run out. Keep dogs off the dunes and away from shorebird nesting areas, and make sure they do not wander into adjacent leash-required parks. This is a vehicle beach, so stay aware of moving traffic on the sand.

The water. The open beach faces the ocean and is not patrolled, so read the swell before letting a keen swimmer off. The creek mouth at the southern end runs strong tidal currents; avoid letting dogs cross on an outgoing tide.

What's there. Park at Gallows Beach car park for the northern end, or via Sawtell Road for the southern end near Boambee Creek Reserve, which has a playground, BBQ shelters, toilets and picnic areas. A designated 4WD access point is also on the beach.

Getting there. Take Hogbin Drive for the northern access near Corambirra Point and Gallows Beach, or Sawtell Road for the Boambee Creek Reserve end. Local taxis and rideshare run from town.

When to go. Weekday mornings are quietest; weekends, holidays and sunny afternoons get busy. The creek end suits a gentler outing, the open beach a proper run.
