Boambee dog lead creek

Boambee Creek, just south of Sawtell, is one of the more complete off-leash set-ups on the Coffs Coast: the ocean beach runs off-leash along its entire length, and where the creek meets the sand you get calm, shallow water for dogs that would rather wade than fight surf. The combination of a long run and a natural dog swimming hole is what makes it worth the trip.

Leash status

The whole of Boambee Beach is off-leash under City of Coffs Harbour rules, with dogs under effective control. The boundaries tighten inland: within Boambee Creek Reserve itself, the picnic and playground area is on-leash, and the fenced playground is no-dogs territory. Keep the lead handy for the walk between the car park and the sand.

Water and terrain

The creek mouth is the drawcard. On a mid to low tide it is calm and shallow, ideal for paddlers and cautious swimmers. On an outgoing tide it changes fast, with currents through the mouth that can run hard, and the beach is unpatrolled, so keep inexperienced dogs well clear of the channel. The beach is wide and long, best walked around low tide, and it is a shared space: 4WD vehicles are permitted on the sand, so keep your dog in sight rather than assuming the beach is empty.

Max: treat the creek mouth with respect on a dropping tide. Wade in from the reserve side on a mid to low tide and you'll get the calm water dogs actually enjoy, without fighting a current.

Getting there and parking

Access is off Sawtell Road into Boambee Creek Reserve, a short drive from the village or a walkable stretch along the coastal path. Sawtell train station and the local bus network cover visitors without a car. Parking in the reserve carries a small fee, and the reserve itself has barbecues, shelters, picnic tables, toilets, beach showers and takeaway food.

When to go

Weekday mornings are quietest; weekend mornings and late afternoons draw the crowds. Time your visit around mid tide for the calmest creek water, and skip the outgoing tide at the mouth altogether if your dog is a keen swimmer.

While you're out there

For a fully fenced alternative, the Thompsons Road Reserve Fenced Dog Park in Coffs Harbour has shade and agility gear, and the North Wall Beach Off-Leash Area is another off-leash sand option north of the creek. In Sawtell village, Bar Que Sera is a dog-friendly stop for afterwards.
