Thompsons Road Reserve Fenced Dog Park is Coffs Harbour's main fully enclosed off-leash space, sitting at 94 Thompsons Road on a large grassy reserve dotted with mature shade trees. A small running creek cuts through the grounds and a footbridge crosses it, which gives water-loving dogs somewhere to splash beyond the usual fetch circuit. It sits straight off the Pacific Highway on the southern side of the city, so it works as a leg-stretch stop for travellers as well as a daily park for locals.

The dog setup

The whole exercise area sits behind secure perimeter fencing with a double-gate entry, and dogs run off-leash inside it under effective voice control. Owners are expected to stay within the fence and keep their dog within sight, and the council's standard rules apply: leash up immediately if things turn unruly, and close every gate behind you. A smaller enclosed zone gives small dogs a quieter option away from the big field. Waste bag dispensers are installed on site, but they run empty regularly, so carry your own bags as backup.

Benches sit under the trees for owners, and the terrain is mostly flat grass with a few gentle slopes. It gets busy on weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings; weekday mornings, mid-afternoons and Sundays are the calm windows if you are working on recall or have a nervous dog.

Getting there and parking

The park sits in a residential and industrial border area, so driving is the practical choice. On-site parking sits near the entrance with direct access off the Pacific Highway, and the entry is wheelchair accessible. Coming from the city centre, head south along Thompsons Road and the reserve is on your left past the industrial lots.

Worth knowing

A dog water fountain is on site, but the creek is the real draw and it turns muddy after rain, so expect a filthy car on the way home during a wet week. Some low-lying patches hold water for days. Check the council's Thompsons Road page before a first visit, as maintenance notices and any temporary closures appear there first.

Close by with the dogs
