Ugly Duckling Wines

Ugly Duckling Wines is a small, family-run cellar door in a rustic cottage setting on West Swan Road, and one of the Swan Valley's genuinely dog-friendly stops. The outdoor dining deck looks across the vines toward the Perth hills, dogs are welcome in that alfresco area, and the kitchen pairs its wines with gourmet pies and generous platters. Doors open from 11am daily, running to 5pm on weekends and 4pm the rest of the week.

The dog setup

Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the outdoor dining and deck area, which is where most of the action is anyway; the cottage tasting room inside stays people-only. Water bowls are usually out, though bringing your own never hurts on a hot valley afternoon. Keep the lead on and your dog settled, because the deck is a working dining space, and on busy weekends there are tour groups moving through.

The vibe

The wines are small-batch and locally grown, with Chardonnay a local favourite, and the free tastings make this an easy first stop on a West Swan crawl. Live music most weekend afternoons lifts the atmosphere and the crowd level with it, so a noise-shy dog will do better midweek or on a Saturday morning before the first set. The indulgence platter is the order if you are settling in for a while.

Getting there and parking

Set the maps for 7790 West Swan Road, West Swan, about 25 minutes from central Perth. There is on-site parking near the cottage entrance, and the ground between car park and deck is flat and easy with a dog.
