Chateau Yaldara

Chateau Yaldara is the landmark 1947 estate on Hermann Thumm Drive at the southern gateway to the Barossa in Lyndoch, with a grand chateau building, lawns running down to the North Para River, and one of the region's few cellar doors with a published dog policy. Tastings run 9am to 4pm daily, and the staff are as informative about the fortifieds and sparkling Petit Verdot as they are relaxed about a well-mannered dog lying at your feet.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome inside the cellar door during tastings and out on the front lawns, leashed at all times. The policy is specific about temperament: dogs should be socialised, comfortable around people and other dogs, and toilet-trained, which keeps the welcome intact for everyone. On the lawn, wine by the glass comes in plastic cups rather than glass to protect paws and guests, water bowls are provided, and there is no dog fee. Biosecurity rules keep dogs out of the working winery areas and vineyard blocks, so the chateau, lawns and river frontage are the domain.

Max: do the tasting inside first, then buy a glass and claim a spot on the lawn above the river. Shady trees on the western side hold the best afternoon spots.

The vibe

Historic and gracious rather than slick, with the chateau's collection and the wine history part of the draw alongside the Barossa Shiraz, Cabernet and Riesling. Weekends fill with tour groups, so weekday mornings are the calm window for a settled dog. On a fine day the lawn-and-river setting is among the best in the valley to sit with a glass.

Getting there and parking

The estate sits directly off Barossa Valley Way at Lyndoch, about ten minutes from Gawler, with on-site parking right in front of the chateau. Lyndoch village is close enough for a leashed leg-stretch walk before or after a tasting.
