Chalk Hill Wines is a family-owned cellar door on Field Street, with a modern tasting room looking out over the vineyards and spacious lawns that make it easy to bring the dog. It is one of McLaren Vale's more openly dog-welcoming cellar doors, and it shares the site with Pizzateca, so you can eat as well as taste.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas, the lawns and the courtyard, kept on-lead and under control while you taste. The lawn with vineyard views is the place to settle in with a glass. Water bowls are generally available, but bring your own as a backup on warm days.

Known for. Small-batch premium wines, including grenache and alternative varieties, and the wood-fired pizza from on-site Pizzateca, which means a relaxed lunch outdoors with the dog beside you.

Getting there. The address is 56 Field Street, McLaren Vale. There is on-site parking with easy, flat access from the car park to the cellar door and lawns.

Nearby with the dogs. Several other dog-friendly cellar doors are a short drive away, and the paved Shiraz Trail through the vineyards is a good on-lead walk. The McLaren Vale visitor centre has local walking maps.

When to go. Weekday afternoons are quietest on the lawn. Weekends and the pizza service get busy, so arrive early for a shaded patch of grass.
