Sam I Am Cafe

Sam I Am sits on the Main Road strip in McLaren Vale, pouring coffee and turning out brunch from 7am on weekdays. It is a small, casual room with an undercover outdoor section out the front, and that patio is where dogs are welcome.

The dog setup

Dogs can settle beside you on the undercover patio, which keeps them shaded when the Fleurieu sun is sharp and dry on showery days. Water bowls are put out for four-legged guests and the team is relaxed about well-mannered dogs lying close to the table. Keep the lead on while you are there; the patio opens straight onto the footpath of a busy strip.

Max: my water bowl was out before the coffee was, and there was a blanket for me on the cold morning. I approve of both.

The vibe

This is a local breakfast spot first and a wine-country stop second. The menu runs from bacon and egg rolls to chilli scrambled eggs, with gluten-free, vegan and keto options sitting alongside the regular list, and the kitchen leans on local produce. Hours are 7am to 2pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 2pm on weekends.

Getting there and parking

The address is 114 Main Road, McLaren Vale, right on the main strip through town. Street parking runs along Main Road and the side streets behind, easiest to find before the brunch rush lands.

Make a day of it

The Shiraz Trail starts a short walk away for a flat on-lead wander before or after breakfast. Along the same strip you can follow brunch with gelato at Gelateca or save yourself for a pub lunch at the McLaren Vale Hotel. For a second coffee stop up the road, Tin Shed Cafe puts outdoor tables to work for dogs as well.
